BARNSTABLE – While tonight’a presidential debate is expected to draw the focus of 100 million Americans, organizers at both of Cape Cod’s political parties say they are focused locally.
Oh, they’ll watch. Susan Truitt, co-coordinator of the Mid-Cape Democratic Campaign Headquarters, even went so far as to say she is “very nervous.”
That’s exactly the sentiment of Ryan Getchell, regional field director for the Cape & Islands Republican Party. Nervous, but focused on local races.
“Nervous would probably be a good way to sum up the feelings of both parties,” he said.
“I think it will be interesting to say the least,” he said.
Truitt described both candidates as unpredictable, and then called Trump “crazy.”
“But I find the fact that so many apparent voters say they are voting for him to be even more terrifying. He’s only one guy, but the fact that there are so many other people who are willing to stand up and say they support him says a lot about our country,” she said. “He’s just one crazy guy.”
Getchell stayed away from the national discussion, only saying, “if I was in Florida, I’d probably give you a different answer.”
He reiterated that he is focused locally, but said he would be at a viewing party for the debate. “You’ll probably see a lot more reserved Donald Trump,” said Getchell. “But then again it is Trump, so you never know.”
