HARWICH – On the evening before they were to graduate from Cape Cod Technical High School, Joe Pires and Ryan Foss, both 17 of Harwich, went fishing.
“I just wanted to try it out,” said Foss, who was brought to a spot along the Herring River just off of Route 28 by Pires. Foss said he recently began fishing.
“I’ve always fished, since I was seven or eight,” said Pires. “I find it really relaxing after a long day to come down here and throw a line in,” said Pires, who works at Nauset Marine doing “a little bit of everything.”
.
Pires said he fishes about four or five times a week. “Usually, we go to River Road in Orleans,” he said.
They were fishing for striped bass. “They run right through here from the Sound,” said Pires.
It was a quiet night on the water, which gave them time to talk about graduation and reflect on their years in high school. Pires plans to work full time at Nauset Marine. Foss is going to attend the University of Central Florida. But on this night, at least for a few more hours, their worlds had yet not changed.
On a dock in the Herring River, the two graduates were last seen laughing at a shared memory of a time they will always remember.
