The Barmaids: “Leave The City Behind” – Music VIDEO

PROVINCETOWN – This is a great original song, “Leave The City Behind,” written by Damon Gorham, who is the leader of the fun, tight band The Barmaids.

There are four main members of The Barmaids, who have been playing in Provincetown for more than a year.

The Barmaids have friends, very talented friends. And on Thursday night, when we shot this video,  there was an incredible scene happening inside the small classic dive bar, the Old Colony Tap when the Barmaids were joined by, at one point seven other musicians to put on an amazing high energy show for a very appreciative crowd.

It’s maybe the coolest scene on Cape Cod. It’s the coolest that I know.

The Barmaids are Damon Gorham on guitar, flute and vocals; Ian Leahy on guitar and vocals; Matt Berry on keyboard, mandolin and vocals; and Kevin Hardy on bass.

On Thursday for this song, they were joined by Jerome Deupree, of the band, Morphine on drums; Larry Grab of The Grab Brothers on harmonica; Ken Field, of Revolutionary Funk, Woof Woof Meow and others, on saxophone; Lynne Multer, a band leader in New Orleans on trombone; and Richard (RC), an artist in Provincetown, on congas.

Later, DeAngelo Nieves, a local musician, joined on trumpet and the singer, Devy Kendall joined for a couple songs, including Donna Summer’s classic, “I Will Survive.” When Kendall joined, there were 11 musicians playing or singing together in the little Old Colony Tap.

Among other songs, they also played, “Almost Cut My Hair,” by David Crosby, “Locomotive Breath” by Jethro Tull, featuring Gorham on flute, and “Can’t You See” by The Marshall Tucker Band, also featuring Gorham on flute.

The trombone, saxophone, harmonica and trumpet were pretty cool to see playing together in the small tight space. Meanwhile, Gorham was on fire on guitar while running the whole show. It was rather impressive.

And to top the whole scene off, the artist Jerome Greene was there live-sketching the scene as it unfolded. You can see examples of Greene’s music sketches on a mural by Greene on McMillan Wharf.

According to Gorham, besides bar gigs in Provincetown, The Barmaids will be playing, with horns, at the Outer Cape Music Festival on Sunday, September 6th at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m..
