WOODS HOLE – John Malcolm, aka John McNamara, was a member of the uber popular Cape band, Crooked Coast, for more than a decade. He is a great songwriter, and he has one of the best male singing voices on Cape Cod.
A few months ago, McNamara left the band and then announced a rebranding as John Malcolm, a name his family calls him and how he was known when he was young. (Crooked Coast still exists. The three remaining members – Luke Vose, Ben Elder and Shaqed Druyan – are busy working on their own new material.)
This weekend, Malcolm played a set of mostly original songs at the Captain Kidd Restaurant in Woods Hole.
He opened for Benjamin Lee Patterson’s tight band, the Small Motors, who then put on their own great show of Patterson’s originals.
Malcolm played a mix of covers and new original material. He said he is working in the studio and he expects a rollout of his new music in the fall. This sneak preview of his new stuff was really good. He also played one of the best covers I’ve ever heard of “Psycho Killer” by the Talking Heads.
For most of his set, Malcolm played solo but he was backed by the Small Motors for his final two original songs of the night, including this song with a very catchy chorus, “Radio Goodbye.”
