FALMOUTH – At one point during Crooked Coast’s set to finish the day-long multi-band Coast-Fest concert on Falmouth Harbor, singer Luke Vose pointed out that his brother [Tom Vose] built “a giant lighthouse” near the stage.
“Give it up for just showing up and building things,” said Vose to the crowd of about 1,000 who, on the first day of August, were having a highlight night of the summer.
“Isn’t that beautiful? That’s what we do here,” said Vose. “If we can dream it, we can do it, right?”
Right indeed.
It’s sort of a remarkable thing. Crooked Coast, through pure grit and with the help of volunteers like Matthew Manchester and Rich Rogers, have created their own thriving one-day festival in the summer on the idyllic field of green facing Falmouth’s modern bandshell and overlooking beautiful Falmouth Harbor.
While there were several bands at the all day concert, including Vanna Pacella and Badfish (a Sublime cover band), Cape Cod Wave didn’t make it to the show until just before Crooked Coast came on.
We were very interested in seeing this newest iteration of Crooked Coast, which is now a power trio since John McNamara left the band after more than a decade.
McNamara, who has rebranded himself as John Malcolm, is a singular talent with an incredible voice and we admit we missed seeing him with the band.
But nothing lasts forever, as the band pointed out when McNamara left. And the three remaining members showed they still have what it takes to get their hometown singing along.
It’s always been so cool to see how the band’s original lyrics and melodies connect to so many people who sing along to the lyrics. I see a lot of Cape Cod bands playing original music. The sing-along of so many songs is rare and special.
And I have always been a fan of Vose’s poetic sea-tinged blue collar lyrics about friends and dreams and memories.
The band of Vose on guitar and vocals, Ben Elder on bass and vocals, and Shaq Druyan on drums and vocals delivered a fantastic show that brought back some Crooked Coast classics like “Icarus” and “Down For The Count.”
