WELLFLEET – For several years when the Christmas Cavalcade for the Homeless was an annual event, one of our favorite bands to appear was the ever-interesting Bitter & Broken Men’s Chorus.
First of all, the name is magnificent, or maybe I can just relate to such a label. But it was the songs, and lyrics especially, that always caught our attention. On their bandcamp page, they describe themselves as “unapologetic lefty, blue collar shmoes.” The punk attitude shines through.
However, as the years passed, we never really saw that they were playing out much. Maybe it’s because they are based on the Outer Cape and we are on the Upper Cape, or maybe they weren’t playing out much.
Anyway, we went to Wellfleet Porchfest last weekend and unfortunately arrived too late to see some bands. But we had our heart set on seeing the Bitter & Broken Men’s Chorus, so we headed straight to Wellfleet Preservation Hall, where they were playing to a large crowd in the backyard.
The band is composed of Tom Fettig on lead vocals and guitar; Frank Poranski on guitar and vocals; Benny Albro on drums and vocals; Andrew Fettig on bass and vocals; Bill Pernice on piano, and Ken Field on saxophone and flute.
This great song is called, “My Baby’s An Anarchist,” and it was written by Chris Vetromile, an original band member who died in 2021, and Tom Fettig.
Vetromile’s recognizable colorful guitar was on stage as a tribute to him.
