FALMOUTH – Torrential downpours didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits in Falmouth for what is one of the best parties of the year – the Cinco de Mayo gathering thrown by Anejo Mexican Bistro, held this year under a tent on Academy Lane.
A portion of the proceeds, according to Anejo’s Facebook page, were donated to Compassionate Care ALS, which provides “individualized support to those currently living with ALS, their families and caregivers.”
The charismatic stars of the show were the band Crooked Coast, who had the folks in the front the thin, long much-needed tent bouncing, dancing, and often singing along to the band’s older original songs. Some people wore balloons on their heads. Others wore sombreros. Men and women sported fake thick black mustaches.
Despite the weather, it felt like, finally, the calendar had turned towards summer.
And the band delivered, as they always do. They also showcased a few new songs, including this one called, “Cape Cod.”
This was such a perfect way to usher in the upcoming mania that is summer on this peninsula, which is coincidentally called, “Cape Cod.”
Crooked Coast is Luke Vose, John McNamara, Ben Elder and Charles Walton, and they have established one of the strongest followings of any band on Cape Cod, reminiscent of the Incredible Casuals at their peak. And these guys are more than just great musicians and songwriters.
Perhaps as importantly, Crooked Coast have become masters at marketing themselves, including hilarious often self-deprecating promotional videos on social media. And get this – the band has its own store!
Okay, sure. We are fans. But we’re not the only ones.
One more thing about this event. We have noticed that Hyannis has closed off Main Street several times every year. Harwich has Port Summer Nights featuring outdoor music once a week for several weeks of the summer. And Provincetown, famously, is completely pedestrian friendly with lots of street musicians.
We’d sure love to see Falmouth recognize how popular an outdoor show is on Academy lane and perhaps allow it to happen more than only once a year – a point we made last year in an editorial, “Why Only May 5? Make Falmouth Fun Again.”
