The Windy Shining Sea Bikeway, Falmouth Center To Woods Hole – Slideshow

Bike Path, Falmouth to Woods Hole
Written by Brian Tarcy

FALMOUTH – The man on the blue bike rode by me just as I had stopped to take photos (er, rest). He was pedaling hard. I was breathing hard.

“Need a spinnaker on this side,” he shouted. The man riding towards Woods Hole on the Shining Sea Bikeway spoke the truth. This trek was like sailing upwind.

I forged forward.

The entire round trip from the center of Falmouth to Woods Hole on the beautiful Shining Sea Bikeway is about 7-1/2 miles. On this recent day, it felt like I did 7-1/2 miles exercise on the way to Woods Hole, and zero exercise on the way back to Falmouth.

On the way to Woods Hole, I strained. On the way back, I coasted. As it turned out, that was ideal–the perfect exercise machine.

Besides the wind, of course, the bike path offers spectacular natural beauty through the woods and along Vineyard Sound, as well as some clever public art. And at each end of this part of the bike path is a cool village.

The entire 10.7 mile Shining Sea Bikeway, in fact, goes from Woods Hole to to North Falmouth.
