A Shuckin’ Good Time: Saturday afternoon at the 2023 Wellfleet Oysterfest

WELLFLEET – To paraphrase Joni Mitchell, by the time we got to Wellfleet we wanted a half a million oysters. We settled for 18 each and a great afternoon of the sport of major league shucking, followed by the music of The Rip-It-Ups, who are the signature sound of the Wellfleet Oysterfest.

We had hoped to get to Wellfleet earlier in the day to see the first two bands, Sugarcane Duquesne Redux, and a favorite of ours, the Grab Brothers. But, Falmouth is not as close to Wellfleet as one might think and we did not arrive until both bands had finished.

As always, the oysters were delicious and plentiful, the Oyster Stout was a nice chaser and the atmosphere joyous. The truth, though, is that the festival has gone big time, with NESN covering it and LOTS of people. It seemed like the biggest crowd ever, and we wondered how they could fit any more people in.

But, once we found breathing room… and oysters… all was right with the world. Shuck yeah, it was!
