Chatham Lighthouse Beach Shack – Slideshow

Chatham Lighthouse Beach Shack
Written by Brian Tarcy

CHATHAM – The Chatham Lighthouse beach shack is sort of Cape Cod’s community mansion by the sea – a utopian shack of flotsam, jetsam and voluntary anonymous labor that popped up a few years ago about a quarter mile from the lighthouse.

It belongs to no one, and it belongs to all.

The Chatham beach shack is like a living organism – always changing. Weather and humans have brought several changes since we last trekked down the beach to the shack a couple of years ago, but the steady, free spirit of this shack seems to belong to the character, The Dude, from the movie, “The Big Lebowski”.

“Abide,” reads the sign.

As best as we can tell, some loose conglomeration of Chatham folks with a Facebook Page called “Occupy Chatham South Beach” maintain the shack.

Another sign reads, “Go Away!”

We had our turn, so we abided and went away.

We’ll be back.
