DENNIS – Attention Cape Cod bartenders… Brother Phil is crazy about his biscuit. You’ll need to fill his glass up with that dirty booze. Oh yeah, we saw some real blues on Wednesday night at O’Shea’s Olde Inne.
It’s shocking, the kind of talent you can find on Cape Cod. We wandered into O’Shea’s and found Phil Paulin Jr., best known as Brother Phil, backing himself with a loop of rhythm guitar and then playing some some virtuoso bluesy leads on this original song, “The Big Old Biscuit Blues.”
“I call a drink ‘a biscuit’,” he said to us, explaining the title of the song.
We understood. It was pretty clear what Brother Phil, with a bluesy outlaw-sounding voice that seemed to come from the 1930s, wanted. He wanted a biscuit. After listening, we did too.
When we got to O’Shea’s, he was playing along with the talented, charismatic Fred Monthei as they collaborated on unique takes of obscure and semi-obscure covers.
We saw them each perform an original song alone, and each were great – obviously.
But we couldn’t help thinking how we’d love to see what they could write together. Seeing them together was truly a treat.
