On Macmillan Pier — Provincetown’s Heart & Soul

Written by Laura M. Reckford

PROVINCETOWN – Old and new Provincetown come into stark contrast on Macmillan Pier as a super deluxe yacht docks in front of “They Also Faced The Sea,” artist Norma Holt’s iconic oversized photos of fisherman’s wives of Portuguese descent that seem to keep vigil over the pier.

In America’s art colony, it is necessary to pay close attention to details, a Medusa-like mermaid mural amid the rusty accouterments on a fishing boat, a craftsman twisting metal into jewelry in a pier side shack, an ancient anchor signaling the harbor master’s office.

Amid it all, George Lake, a magician from Orleans, found a shady spot to perfect his mysterious craft before taking the act to the challenging “stage” of nearby Commercial Street.
