PROVINCETOWN – There was a serious outbreak of boogie fever at the Provincetown Carnival Parade on Thursday.
The theme this year was “Deep Sea Disco,” which turned Provincetown into a bubble-filled funky town with lots of dancing, and a whole lot of sexy.
Smiles were as contagious as the boogie fever itself, and everyone was clearly, staying alive.
But enough about that. Here is video starting and ending with some snippets of a couple of classic dance songs and in the middle of this video mashup of sights from the parade is overlayed with a song by one of our favorite Cape bands, Provincetown’s very own Grab Brothers. The song is called, “All The Same.” (See our Longform profile of The Grab Brothers).
As you can see, there were lots of shiny wigs and fins and plenty of glittery jellyfish, in the parade as well as in the crowd.
Provincetown Carnival is one of the most fun and crazy days of the year on Cape Cod. There really is nothing else like it. In a town with a year-round population of about 3,000, Carnival attracts about 100,000 people. It’s mind-boggling.
The energy was palpable and the mood, as at every Carnival, was happiness, hilarity and joy. It appeared that everyone survived, and everyone danced with somebody.
The theme for next year’s Carnival is “Cosmic Rodeo.”
Finally, a quick shoutout of appreciation to Matty Dread of WOMR. I arrived, driving from Falmouth, shortly after the parade started. On the way into town, I was greatly amused by Matty’s colorful narration of what he was seeing and hearing go past the window of the radio station, which is on Commercial Street, the route of the parade. It was like I was there before I even got there.
