BREWSTER – Genius comes in many forms. Christine Rathbun Ernst’s amazing storytelling and ability to move emotions along the spectrum from laughter to tears sure fits the bill.
This is Ernst performing her original story about waiting in line at the thrift shop of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Cotuit. She performed this at the Christmas Cavalcade For the Homeless on Sunday.
The Christmas Cavalcade For the Homeless raises money for the Housing Assistance Corporation and their work with homeless individuals and families. This year, it was held at the Ocean Edge in Brewster.
This simple story about a line at a thrift shop is transformed by Ernst into all of the audience witnessing something like a moment of grace.
Last year, when we saw Ernst perform a story at the Christmas Cavalcade for the Homeless, we were stunned. It was so moving, so funny, and such an intense, in-the-moment performance that our jaw dropped.
She performed a different story last year. We were mesmerized. This year, the story again fit perfectly into the season and we taped it because we thought you’d be mesmerized. It is a bit long for a Cape Cod Wave video. But you’ll quickly get pulled in.
It’s not so much the words, as the way Ernst, writer and performer, says them. Well, okay. It is the words.
“Peg and Janet pamper this woman in a way that only old Catholic thrift shop ladies know how… It is an act of sublime tenderness.”
