DENNIS – There is often calm in the eye of a storm, and in this raucous Chandler Travis original, “Bombogenesis,” performed by the uber-talented Catbirds, the calm became an audience-participation moment.
Travis, who has two other bands (the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, and the Chandler Travis Three-O), created this very interesting musical ride in under three minutes. The band coalesced into a force of nature.
The Catbirds are Travis on bass, Mark Usher on guitar, Steve Wood on guitar, and Sam Wood on drums. To buy Travis’ music, go here.
There is no one better at reading an audience than the old pro, Travis, who started the set on Friday night at the Harvest Gallery Wine Bar with somewhat mellower music. Understated, even.
While the audience of obvious fans were eating and drinking early in the night, Travis suggested the band was finished playing after three songs. They were not.
When the dance floor filled, the Catbirds played a good eight songs in row. With some banter and requests in between, they did it again. From Mel Torme to 1960s rock to originals by both Travis and Steve Wood, the Catbirds were full-attention fun.
And there really is nothing to compare to Steve Wood playing guitar.
Near the end of the night, as a certain well-known audience member was leaving, she was called on stage and the band played “My Baby Likes To Boogaloo,” originally recorded by Don Gardner in 1966.
Yes, the great night of music got even better when Sarah Swain joined the band on stage to sing.
