WELLFLEET – When we heard that the Spampinato Brothers were going to be playing at the Wellfleet Beachcomber Thursday night, we did the logical thing – we planned our week around it. It was a great plan.
In a show filled with rock, rockabilly, and blues that also included some instrumental surf music, the Spampinato Brothers had the crowd at the iconic bar on the dunes dancing all night.
Displaying world-class musicianship and a joy of being in the moment, the band of Joey Spampinato on bass, Johnny Spampinato on guitar, along with their bandmates, Bruce MacLean on guitar, and Lou Cataldo on drums were on fire from the start of the show.
Here is one of the few times when they slowed it down a bit, playing “What Can I Say?” a beautiful NRBQ song featuring some silky harmonies and a sweet guitar solo by MacLean. The song was written by Joey Spampinato, who, of course, is a founding member of the nationally-known and incredibly-respected NRBQ.
And in connecting the dots further, Johnny Spampinato was a founding member of the Incredible Casuals, our favorite Cape Cod band ever, who played a popular weekly gig at the Beachcomber for years.
So yeah, seeing the Spampinato Brothers at the Beachcomber in August was a great plan.
