Kiteboarders Chase The Wind Through Fog

WEST FALMOUTH – Ben Stadelmaier of Falmouth, is a painter. So when he found out that the wind conditions at Old Silver Beach in North Falmouth were good for kiteboarding, he said, “ I was standing on a ladder.”

“My buddy called me,” he said. “I contemplated it for a moment, and then realized that I was at a good stopping point.”

When he arrived he saw some of his best friends out in the water, but within a few minutes some of those kites were on the beach, as plans had changed because wind conditions in the foggy weather had changed. They were going to Chapoquoit Beach in West Falmouth.

They had earlier avoided Chapoquoit because it was high tide and there wasn’t much actual beach to work with, but the word was out that the wind was better over there.

A few moments later, the same group of kite boarders, give or take a couple, were in West Falmouth where others had already gathered.

Most didn’t find out by phone. “It’s on the web” said Hanumant Singh, who works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and lives in Falmouth. “You look at the wind, the water is warming up, how can you go wrong?” he said.

Nevin Sayre of Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard, was part of the migration from Old Silver to Chapoquoit. Sayre, a former national champion windsurfer, and a kiteboarder since 2000, said he came with a friend to Old Silver, after a business meeting earlier in the day in Wareham.

Although he lives on the Vineyard, Sayre said he always brings his kiteboarding equipment to the Cape, “And I always try to plan my meetings around the wind,” he said. And then he looked around at the other kiteboarders and said, “In fact, this is a board meeting. An executive board meeting.”
