CHATHAM – Some may have decided not to attend First Night Chatham 2023 because of the weather. We’re glad we went. Yes, we got wet–drenched, actually. But it was not as cold as past years and the performances we saw were excellent.
We started the day at the Town Photo, always a kick with hundreds waving at the photographer positioned in the crane high above the crowd.
Then on to the Community Center where parents and children were delighting in the Brewster Bayside Skippers, the the Bubble Wrap Stomp and the Toe Jam Puppet Band, a group that managed to make it “snow” inside the Center.
We were then greeted by a substantial crowd at the Chatham Railroad Museum where those of all ages were marveling at the model train gliding round and round the track.
There were dozens of exceptional musical performances and it was hard to decide what to see. We saw Zoe Lewis; Jukin’ J. & the Rockers; Crabgrass Bluegrass Band; Alastair Moock and the Cape Cod Fiddlers. All were great. It was truly a fantastic night of music. Moock was the one we had not seen before and we were very impressed with his original songs and also this rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” the ultimate New Year’s Eve ballad.
Moock educated us that “Auld Lang Syne” was written by Robert Burns, poet of Scotland. more than 200 years ago. Moock’s soulful rendition – the first time we’d ever heard it not accompanied by party horns and shrieks of strained forced joy – warmed our hearts as we enter another year on Cape Cod.
