BREWSTER – Next to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural history is a path to Wing Island, marked by a small blue and white sign on Route 6A, that leads to a spectacular view of Cape Cod Bay.
We only saw the small sign because four hikers were leaving the path just as we drove by. It aroused our curiosity. We are glad we decided to see where it leads.
The walk includes more than one path and it winds through woods, marsh and dunes, and partially alongside Paine’s Creek.
We were warned by other hikers we met that hiking here must be timed with the tides because part of the walk is over a series of boards crossing a marsh that floods at high tide. We, by luck and not by looking at a tide chart, timed it right.
On the day we visited, when we reached Cape Cod Bay, the sky was hazy, making the view at the water really interesting as the sky seemed to melt into the bay. And the windless air made for something like an immense beautiful near silence. So quiet, so peaceful.
