Box Turtle Woods & Loagy Bay Marsh, Wellfleet – Slideshow

Box Turtle Woods & Marsh Conservation Area
Written by Brian Tarcy

WELLFLEET – Off Lieutenant Island Road is a trail through some thick woods with the intriguing name, Box Turtle Woods.

The area, according to information from the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, once had so many box turtles “that the mailing address for the old farmouse was simply ‘BTH’ for Box Turtle Hollow.”

We did not,  in fact, see any turtles. We did see a deer and also four hawks fighting in air before one left the other three and swooped through the woods about 10 feet from us.

And then we found the marsh, “historically known as Harding’s Meadow,” according to the Wellfleet Conservation Trust.
