WEST FALMOUTH – Almost 250 years ago, a farm house was built on the Bourne Farm property in West Falmouth and it still stands today.
The historic house dates to 1775, one of the earliest in town. It is complimented by a sturdy historic barn building and the two are set high above the picturesque Crocker Pond.
Thanks to the foresight of preservationist Ermine Lovell, this 49-acre historic farm property was saved in perpetuity back in 1979. It is one of the holdings of Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries, Inc., which Lovell incorporated as a non-profit in 1962.
While Lovell died at age 95 in 2000, the Bourne Farm and the numerous other properties she purchased for preservation continue to give visitors and locals alike a glimpse into the history of the town of Falmouth.
The Salt Pond non-profit allows the public to walk around the farm property and it connects to the Shining Sea Bikeway in the rear. While it is beautiful year-round, it is particularly scenic in the fall when the colorful leaves are reflected in the peaceful waters of the pond.
