FALMOUTH – The statue of Katharine Lee Bates, Falmouth-born author of “America The Beautiful,” stands proudly year-round on the Falmouth Library Lawn.

But once a year, she becomes Katharine Lee Bates in bloom as the pink flowers surrounding her seem to make her glow.

Less than a mile away is one of those shining seas she was writing about.
