WELLFLEET – On Friday night, the Outer Cape musician community came together at the Wellfleet Beachcomber to raise money for one of their own, guitarist Steve Wood, who is battling cancer. They called the event “Woo Woopalooza.”
It was, as we heard more than one person say, “the best night of the summer.”
These musicians are some of our favorite people in the world. Frankly, we continue to remain in awe that four or so people can pick up these things they call “instruments” and bang around on them together and create such joy. There is nothing more fun than watching people who know how to do this actually having fun doing it.
And when you add in the obvious overwhelming feeling of love for Wood, and it seemed, for each other, Woopalooza took on something of a Woodstock feel.
And it was efficient too. The changeover from band to band was the smoothest we’ve ever seen at an event like this. It probably helped that guitarist Mark Usher and drummer Sam Wood played in more than half the bands.
Seven bands played about 25 minutes each – The Ticks, The Flakes, Sara Swain & The Oh Boys!, The Spampinato Brothers, Sal Baglio & The Woodpeckers (featuring Steve Wood), The Inscrutable Casuals, and The Catbirds.
We randomly captured a snippet of each band and mashed it together into a quick trip through the evening.
