FALMOUTH – One of the cooler spots I have hiked in a while is an old gravel pit near the Falmouth leaf dump: the Breivogel Ponds Conservation Area.
The 68-acre parcel was once slated to be a large subdivision and has two man-made ponds that Carl Breivogel dug “to provide water for the beach grass he grew for sale to nurseries and towns,” according to a 300 Committee Land Trust website.
The land trust is working to help restore natural habitats of the former sand pit, which the town of Falmouth purchased as conservation land in 2000.
I found it to be an interesting property. During this particular hike, the winter sun lit up the landscape, revealing a splash of colors that painted a fleeting moment just for me.
