Aptucxet Trading Post, Bourne – Slideshow

Aptucxet Trading Post
Written by Brian Tarcy

BOURNE – Just off the Cape Cod Canal bike path is the Aptucxet Trading Post, a replica of the 17th century Pilgrim Trading Post. The original trading post was built in 1628 by the Plymouth Colony to trade with the local Wampanoag people and Dutch traders arriving from Europe.

Also on the 12-acre campus of the Museums at Aptucxet is a replica of a 19th century coastal schooner, the Speedwell, and a work-in-progress, a half-scale model of the schooner Sultana. Appropriately, a boat’s cannon is set next to the two schooners. Back in 1782, the Speedwell and the Sultana faced off in The Battle of Nantucket, according to the Bourne Historical Society.

One of the many special things about bike paths all over Cape Cod are the treasures you might find by taking a detour off the path. Often these are long walks deep into the woods leading to a pond or a beach or a cranberry bog.

But this step back into history was literally just steps off the Canal bike path.
