CHATHAM – A lighthouse getting painted is not something you see every day. Actually, for most people, a lighthouse itself is not something you see every day.
[quid-slider initial=.99 min=”.50″ text=”Slide to leave a tip”]We recently found ourselves walking on the beautiful walking path parallel to Hardings Beach that led us to the Stage Harbor Lighthouse, which is actually a decommissioned lighthouse without a working light.
The Stage Harbor Lighthouse, built in 1880, was decommissioned in 1933. The lighthouse, minus a light, is privately owned.
We found a two man crew from Mad Hatter Painting of Sandwich getting ready to put macro epoxy paint onto the top of the tower where the light used to be.
The crew of Tiago Marques and G Quarenti, who was in charge on site, were using a large lift to get themselves to the top of the tower.
Sean Braney, the owner of Mad Hatter, said he has a crew of about two dozen workers who paint large and small projects – everything from churches and waste treatment plants to private residences.
Quarenti, said Braney, is “my right hand man.”
The lighthouse project took a lot of planning, said Braney, because of the location. “We had to air down all the equipment just to get it over the sand,” he said.
It is a two-year project, said Braney. “This year we did the lighthouse. Next year, we’ll do the actual house.”
