FALMOUTH – Stage Door Canteen is the big band around these parts, with a powerful horn section giving everything they play a signature sound. But their repertoire includes a wide variety of music, including this bluesy rendition of the soul classic “Midnight Train to Georgia.” The song, made popular by Gladys Knight and the Pips, was written by Jim Weatherly.
Jodi Edwards, who has starred in numerous Falmouth Theatre Guild productions, playing everything from Marian the Librarian in “Music Man” to Maria in “The Sound of Music,” is accomplished in many musical styles herself, from opera to jazz.
Here she gives a well-known song a bittersweet edge at the Falmouth Theatre Guild’s 60th Anniversary Gala.
Watch in the final section of the song as the camera pans the crowd and catches Eric Gomes in the gold-and-silver jacket, who is a longtime Falmouth Theatre Guild member and frequent director, dancing with Irene Thibeault, who first performed in a Guild show back in the 1960s and turned 90 on the week of the gala.
The 60th Anniversary Gala was a night to remember, living up to the song, “The Best of Times is Now,” which was the finale of a group of songs performed earlier in the evening.
