FALMOUTH – Kevin McGeough, an Irish musician living in Falmouth and one of the leaders of the Whiskey & Stout Night at Grumpy’s Pub, sang this fun and fact-based original song Wednesday night, “It Never Rains In A Bar.”
A hidden musical gem of Cape Cod is Whiskey & Stout Night at Grumpy’s Pub – a half circle of three to five or more musicians playing acoustic music and, well, drinking whiskey and stout between songs. By the time we left, there was a banjo, two guitars, a standup bass, and a bodhran – a traditional Irish drum.
The musicians didn’t bother with the stage, about 30 feet to their right. They sat on barstools across from the bar, where the sparse audience also sat on barstools. This was an intimate setting in Grumpy’s – a dive bar designed for a party. And it worked.
You should have been there.
McGeough, accompanied on this song by Jack Dolan on bodhran and Josh Dayton on stand up bass, was a joy to watch as he sort of became his songs in the way he played guitar and sang. And also it’s true, to the best of our experience, that it never rains in a bar.
