PROVINCETOWN – Until last week, I had only seen Billy Hough once before, at the 2019 Christmas Cavalcade for the Homeless when he enthusiastically sang a very memorable happy birthday to Jesus.
I had long heard and read that his “Scream Along With Billy” show was the thing to see in Provincetown.
Well, it turns out that sometimes people are right.
He started the show in a somewhat mild mannered way wearing Clark Kent glasses and, after his theme song, playing a couple of nice mellow songs. And then he took a break and put on his blond wig, and it was then that a warped Provincetown version of musical Superman appeared.
Scream Along With Billy, featuring Hough and his longtime bass player Sue Goldberg, is a show always built around a theme or an album. We saw his show built around songs from movies, in honor of the Provincetown International Film Festival. He has written songs for the movies himself, and spoke of it during the show.
The above song by Billy Hough, “Radical Days,” was in the movie, “Time Out Of Mind” starring Richard Gere and Ben Vereen. It’s a moody, fantastic song.
Also, below is a short sample of a few other songs and the atmosphere Hough and Goldberg created at the ‘Scream Along’ show at the Grotto Bar last Friday night.
Here is our video of a bit of Billy and the audience (screaming, or dancing, along) near the end of the show.
