CHATHAM – There were no footprints in the snow when I arrived at sunrise at Lighthouse Beach. Mine were the first across the light fluffy snow.
To be accurate, there was not an actual sunrise as often depicted as a glowing ball of yellow rising in the horizon. Rather, the world just got lighter. Well, whiter. The ground was white. The sky was white, as was the sea, and it occurred to me: I was in an actual snow globe.
Big flakes were floating. The calendar had turned, and the confetti of cosmic celebration fell from the sky.
I was on a mission. I wanted to see the Chatham beach shack in the virgin snow. I was at first disappointed that the sky wasn’t getting lighter, but the further I walked the more intrigued I became by the monotone nature of the pale snowy morning.
The beach shack did not disappoint. It was spectacular, as it is at any time of year, but it was especially interesting in the fresh snow with not another human in sight.
The walk back offered a great view of Chatham Light. So happy new year. Ours started with magic.
