Where’s the Figawi? Sailors have been asking that since 1972, when the first Figawi boat race was held between Hyannis and Nantucket and some sailor allegedly asked something that sounded like, “Where the figawi?”
According to folklore, they were just off Nantucket in a thick fog.
And with that, the race that began with four boats on Memorial Day weekend had a name. The Figawi race has grown into a major event with 226 boats participating this year, and a charity that raises about $200,000 every year for local causes.
Besides the race, the Figawi is also a huge party after the race on Nantucket with sailors, having finished the obviously arduous journey from Hyannis to the Island, are finally ready to let off a bit of steam and have some fun.
Our Nantucket sources have told us that the sailors do indeed have fun on the Island. Sometimes, we have been told, they have too much fun. As if such a thing exists.

Okay, it was a ferry. We never know where the figawi either.
