The Greenheads Open The Beachcomber – VIDEO

WELLFLEET – So that’s how The Greenheads do it. Wow.

We have long heard the legend of The Greenheads playing opening night at the Wellfleet Beachcomber, so we thought we were prepared. We had before seen the great guitarist Steve Wood perform with iterations of The Greenheads, so we thought we knew what to expect.

But wow. Wood, who is fighting cancer, was there on opening night just as he and The Greenheads have been for years. And if this is what it is always like, we get it. What a show he, bass player Sarah Swain, and drummer Sam Wood put on. Sam is Steve’s son.

For us, the few of Woods’ original songs that we know ride a fantastic high energy wire, but it’s his guitar playing and charisma, especially at The Beachcomber, that were essentially addictive.

Some legends live up to their billing. We were not the only ones, apparently, who heard of the legend of opening night. There was an hour line to get in the Beachcomber on what became a chilly evening. When we left at 11 PM, the line outside had still not shortened.

Here’s the Greenheads with “Daddy Rolling Stone.”
