The “Functional Art” of Walter Baron, Boatbuilder – A Profile

Old Wharf Dory
Written by Brian Tarcy

WELLFLEET – There’s just something about a wooden boat. “It sails differently on the water,” said Walter Baron, a boatbuilder in Wellfleet. “It has a lot more personality” than a fiberglass boat, he said.

“It kind of has a life of its own,” said Baron. “It’s made out of something that was alive.”

Baron, owner of the Old Wharf Dory Company, knows a lot about wooden boats as he has been building them for almost half a century.
