WELLFLEET – With Hurricane Ernesto dancing a few hundred miles from Cape Cod, the 50th Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Surfing Classic at Whitecrest Beach featured some of the biggest waves the contest has seen in recent years.
The waves were “intense,” as well as “clean and beautiful… and they peaked right at the last moment. They’re huge,” said one surfer.
It was that kind of day, featuring the type of wave it takes to snap a surfboard in half. Yes, that happened.
The waves were “brutal,” said the surfer holding two halves of a surfboard.
But fun. Yes, this was the Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Surfing Classic, the best event of the summer. Word has gotten out. It was very crowded, and the audience seemed to enjoy it as much as the surfers.
It’s hard to explain a vibe. But this was that, a world of happy people in the midst of their passion. And it’s been going on for 50 years. The vibe and the wisdom have been passed down through the generations.
So, as 11-year-old Julien Brencher, whose father Kurt lives in Eastham, said, “Get out there on whatever surfboard you have, and rip it!”
