How To Move A 10-Foot Bunny From Route 6A to Cotuit

Written by Laura M. Reckford

BARNSTABLE – When Maggie Van Sciver curates an art exhibit , she typically spends more than a year planning the show. Her current exhibit, “Please Touch” at Cotuit Center for the Arts July 9 to September 7, 2025, displays more than 50 works that viewers are encouraged to touch.

Six months ago, the exhibit was very much on her mind when she happened to spy a 10-foot rabbit sculpture in the yard of an acquaintance. She talked them into allowing her to borrow the rabbit for her exhibit.

Then the problem became how to transport it safely from its home off Route 6A in Barnstable across town to the Cotuit Center for the Arts. The rabbit is made of fiberglass, so it is not as heavy as it looks. Nevertheless, this would not be a simple task.

Friends and family members were called in to assist. A flatbed trailer was borrowed. Tarps to wrap the precious cargo were secured. Logistics were scrutinized for the plan, nicknamed “Bunny-palooza.” All systems were go.

Finally the day arrived. Here is what happened.
