Dangerous Waves & Land Surfing at the Oldtimers Longboard Surfing Classic – VIDEO

WELLFLEET – Dangerous waves turned the 2025 Cape Cod Longboard Surfing Classic into a land surfing contest on White Crest Beach.

Here is a video snapshot of the event accompanied by music by one of our favorite Cape bands, The Grab Brothers: “Ain’t Got Enough Swing.”

While the remnants of Hurricane Erin, hundreds of miles offshore, caused dangerous shore-breaking waves and a ten-knot current moving north, the Outer Cape surfing community took their surfing skills onto land as they lined up for photos and then “performed” on their surfboards.

It was, in some ways, the most interesting of all surfing contests.

And once again, no matter that there were no safe waves to ride, it was the best day of the summer.

This tight-knit surfing community, fueled by years of friendship and a drink concoction called “Willie’s Wipeout,” celebrated the 51st Oldtimers Classic by having lots of fun and simply making the best of it.

And I was happy to see one of my favorite people on Cape Cod and certainly one of the funniest, Edward Gurnett, get the Oldtimer of the Year Award.
