ArtsCape: Please Touch (the Art!) at Cotuit

Written by Laura M. Reckford

Cotuit – You know how you’re not supposed to touch art in an art gallery? You are just supposed to look. But sometimes, you really want to touch the art.

Good news: In what may be a first for the region and is certainly unusual, a new art show opening at Cotuit Center for the Arts is full of art you can touch.

“Please Touch,” a major regional art exhibit, invites visitors to touch a wide assortment of work created by more than 50 celebrated artists.

“Many Mouths to Feed,” plywood, plastic, yard and googly eyes, by Sue Beardsley, is among the works in the new show, “Please Touch” at Cotuit Center for the Arts.

This hands-on show will be open from Wednesday, July 9, through Sunday, September 7, on Tuesdays through Sundays from 10am to 4 pm. The entire first and second floor galleries of the Cotuit Center for the Arts will be devoted to this exhibit, which is free and open to the public.

“Who among us hasn’t wanted to reach out and feel the surface of a piece of sculpture or the texture of a painting? This exhibit will provide a rare opportunity for everyone to actually touch every one of the incredible artworks on display,” said Maggie Van Sciver, the curator of the exhibit.

“This is Maggie’s eighth major exhibit at our venue,” said Cotuit Center for the Arts Executive Director David Kuehn. “From the moment she proposed the idea for an entirely touchable exhibit – we were enthralled. She always brings exquisite works from preeminent artists to our region.”

“Visitors to this exhibit will be delighted by the artists who have graciously agreed to permit the public to experience their work in a new and unexpected manner. It is going to be a captivating exhibit, which you will not want to miss,” said Van Sciver.

Cotuit Center for the Arts is located at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit.
