FALMOUTH – It was a storybook small town Americana holiday celebration, Cape Cod-style. With thousands and thousands of friends and neighbors.
We have been attending the annual lighting of the Falmouth Village Green for many years, but we don’t remember ever seeing this many people. Perhaps it was the mild temperatures, hovering close to 50 degrees and the dry, clear night sky.
During the afternoon, Main Street in the center of town was closed to cars for the Holiday Stroll and for two road races. The one for children, called the GhELF run featured hundreds of little ones, many in festive holiday attire, taking off from the Village Green and looping back in a half-mile run. Next came the Jingle Jog, the adult run, with a longer loop, and even more holiday attire on display.

As evening fell, businesses remained open and many were decorated with festive holiday lights. Families and people of all ages strolled in the middle of the street along with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too, Elmo and more.
A highlight was watching the talented students from Turning Pointe Dance Studio put on an impressive show in the middle of Main Street, with the dances set to holiday tunes, including a tap-dancing reindeer.
As the hour approached for the lighting of the Village Green, people gathered around the dark space. There was the countdown and then, like magic, the brightly colored lights came on throughout the green, illuminating the displays, the holiday train, the wooden carolers, dioramas showing holiday scenes, and, of course, at the eastern tip of the Green, pointing down Main Street, Santa in his sleigh being pulled by his reindeer, with Rudolph leading the herd.
The Falmouth Brass Choir led the festive caroling of holiday songs, as children led their parents through the annual discovery of the colorful displays around the Green.
Our night ended at The Pickle Jar Kitchen on Main Street, across from Town Hall, where The Silent Trees duo performed a variety of classic rock and more to an enthusiastic crowd, dancing and singing along, some still wearing their race numbers from the Jingle Jog. What a magical night!
