WOODS HOLE – She has an amazing view but as a companion, Rachel Carson is rather quiet.
For the past three years, Rachel Carson (well, a statue of her) has been seated on a bench near the Woods Hole sundial staring out at sea.
The statue is a wonderful reminder that the renowned environmentalist and author of the book, “Silent Spring,” spent time learning in Woods Hole.
On Sunday, we spent more than a hour sitting on the bench next to her trying to see what she sees. After a while we forgot we were next to a statue and when we glanced over, it really did seem for an instant like someone was sitting there taking notes.
We watched the sunset together. A couple of times, Cape Cod Wave stood and walked a few feet to the water to get a better view. We assume that’s what she does when no one is looking.
