WELLFLEET – One thing that always amazes me at the height of summer on Cape Cod is that, with a bit of work, I can almost always find a stretch of beach to myself. So it was on Great Island on Wednesday afternoon.
I saw a handful of others on my hike, but essentially I had my own private beach.
It was a warm, humid, and spectacular day. Interesting as well. Once I hiked out to the beach, I kept staring at the horizon, trying to figure out where exactly it was. The sky melted into the sea, it seemed.
The undefined distance mixed with beautiful solitude was a moving experience.
For me, there’s nothing quite like solitude on a Cape Cod beach in the midst of this pandemic. And while travels from Falmouth to Wellfleet, with crowds of folks everywhere, made it seem like the pandemic is over, I am still keeping my distance… and rather enjoying it.
