BOURNE – We got away from all the noise, found ourselves a quiet place on the planet, and listened to time flowing gently by.
We recently trekked through the snow and came upon this babbling brook in the Four Ponds Conservation Area of Bourne. We weren’t looking for a babbling brook. But that was what we found ourselves standing near; a brook that was, in fact, babbling in the most serene way.
We didn’t stay long. We continued on our trek through the woods. But the brook stayed with us for days for maybe the same reason as ocean waves; that whole listening-to-time thing.
Time is so volatile. These times especially.
And the noise. On the national stage, which has become practically unavoidable, there is vitriol and malice and self-righteousness that has bled into the lives of many Americans on social media, or those consuming any kind of mass media. Teams have formed. It seems we all must now pick a side.
But when we got away from the divisive noise, we could reflect on the America that we actually know right here on Cape Cod, where life is fragile and joyful and, all in all, much less angry than we had been told when we were listening to things other than a babbling brook in the woods of Bourne.
