An Autumn Walk at the Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary

Written by Laura M. Reckford

FALMOUTH – Things are looking up. It’s easy to keep your eyes on the ground during a walk in the woods but then you might miss the canopy of trees changing color against the cloudless blue sky.

A recent walk at the Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary was a quiet visit. Sounds of chirping and squawking just out of sight.

Holly berries ranging from dark blue to ruby red on the hundreds of holly trees in the 49-acre sanctuary.

An elaborate round bird house, with multiple units, stands mid-field, and nearby, simple bird boxes, with Quaker simplicity, stand ready for nest-makers.

Food and lodging. This is a place for birds.

Walking through the pine and oak forest, you come upon Grassy Pond, its reeds turning to russet.

As we were leaving the sanctuary, a mother arrived with two young children.

“Look,” the young boy said, as a critter scampered through the parking lot.

“It’s a chipmunk,” Mom said. “We’re seeing things already.”
