NORTH FALMOUTH – The four teenage girls took turns being connected to a rope swing that allowed them to fly out over Wing Pond on a perfect Saturday afternoon in mid-October.
“We actually don’t have wifi at the house, and there’s barely any cellphone reception around here,” said Maya Rao, 15, of Needham, who was visiting her summer house with her sister, Paloma, 14, and their two friends, Jackie Anderson, 15, and a girl named Natalie, 14, who declined to give her last name. “We find things to do,” said Maya. “It’s good to disconnect.” All are from Needham.
Natalie said Falmouth is fun. “We went pumpkin picking,” she said. “We tasted cranberries from the bog.”
Not far off of the Shining Sea Bikeway, near the cranberry bogs, these four teenagers were talking to each other, and taking turns swinging from the rope.
“No one knows who put it up,” said Maya. “It’s been here at least five years.” They had walked to this spot. “Not many people come here,” said Maya.
Jackie said the rope swing is “fun, but a little scary.” As for Falmouth compared to Needham, she said, Falmouth is “nicer, there’s more nature. But I miss being connected.”
And then she took her turn on on the rope swing, seeing the afternoon through a perspective not currently available by phone.
