Wellfleet Oyster Festival, A Shucking Good Time – Slide Show

Oyster Fest

WELLFLEET – Shuck yeah, there were oysters.

Sunday at the Wellfleet OysterFest, where folks were shucking oysters in the street and even on a stage, thousands of folks gathered to eat many thousands of oysters.

There were raw oysters, fried oysters, oyster stew, oyster tacos, and even a special Sam Adams oyster stout, which we felt journalistically compelled to sample.

In fact, for you, we sampled pretty much all of it. Yes, we did this for you.

All things oysters were, as one might say at this event, shucking awesome.

That’s how one talks, or at least T-shirts (yes, it’s a verb here) at the oyster festival where we saw plenty of “Mutha Shucka” gear, a “Shuck Norris” shirt and, if you can’t shucking see where this is going now, more than one T-shirt that said, “Shuck You.”

Aw shucks, it was pure pun fun and oysters. So many oysters. We even saw a two-pound oyster auctioned off.

The delicious Wellfleet oysters consumed by so many happy people listening to some of the best bands on Cape Cod were the main attraction, but there was so much more… of everything, from food to crafts, oyster-related and not, to clothing, and, well, more oysters.

Tourists in out-of-town sports gear mixed with locals in wading boots, while some costumed folks, including Poseidon, were part of the scene.

The Wellfleet Oyster Festival, in its 17th year, raises money for Wellfleet SPAT (Shellfish Promotion and Testing) Inc.

The event is the biggest fundraiser for SPAT, which offers a local college scholarship program, community grant awards and initiatives to support Wellfleet’s shellfishing and aquaculture industries.
