Wellfleet Oyster Farmers Working the Flats

WELLFLEET – No rest for the weary. An icy breeze was blowing on a recent afternoon but shellfishermen were out working their oyster farms off Mayo Beach, just as they do all winter long.

On the shore, close to the beach, a dilapidated shack is a vision of old Cape Cod. Offshore, is also a view of history, as shellfishing has been practiced in these parts going all the way back to the Native Americans who first settled the land.

From the looks of it, this is work for those with sturdy builds and hardy souls. The rest of us simply get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Order an extra dozen oysters next time you’re out—as a way to tip your hat to these hardworking oyster farmers of Wellfleet.
