Surfing Dudes & Chicks at Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Classic in Wellfleet – SLIDESHOW

Written by Laura M. Reckford

WELLFLEET – It’s been a couple weeks but the end of summer hurrah that is the Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Classic stays with you. Youngsters, oldsters and everyone in between come out to Whitecrest Beach in Wellfleet for this classic surfing competition. The 42nd annual event took place on Sunday, August 21.

Apparently the beverage of choice when watching the contest is something called “Willie’s Wipeout” located in the cooler near the lifeguard stand. At least that’s what I heard from another spectator. Sounded interesting.

A little background from previous Cape Cod Wave articles about the Longboard Classic.

There are about 150 surfers competing in 10 categories and it is all for charity: the Kenney Norton Scholarship Fund and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod.

Play by play commentary from the lifeguard stand ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous; mostly ridiculous.

For example, as the surfers of a certain age trotted down to the water: “Grab your sticks and kiss your chicks.”

How about two of us on that board? It can be done -- at the Cape Cod Oldtimers Longboard Classic.

On the surfers lined up in the category of Yuppies: “Some of them are very broke. They went to art school.”

To announce the category of Puppies, men from age 21 to 29: “Maybe you’re out of college. Maybe not. Maybe you’re just chillin’.”

Of the young man who made the unfortunate decision to wear a wetsuit: “The man with a wetsuit will go unmentioned.”

When the women’s guard (lifeguards, that is) came up: “You’ll notice you don’t see any wetsuits there. That’s because they’re made of the right stuff.”

It’s all in good fun and from the looks of the hundreds who showed up, a good time was had by all, especially those who partook of the Willie’s Wipeout.
